Fit to Furnish: Tips for Measuring Your Space for La-Z-Boy Comfort

Picture this: You've just bought a beautiful new sectional that doesn't fit through your hallway. Frustrating, right? Often, the smallest details, like measuring, slip through the cracks.

Before making your purchase decision, there are many important measurements to consider. Can the furniture fit through your front door? What about the entry points to your living room, bedroom, or dining room?

Ensuring you have the correct measurements of all entry points is a vital step in selecting the right furniture for your space. Worried about getting the measurements right? If it seems overwhelming, you can schedule an appointment with our designers, who will measure your space.

Feel sure about your measuring abilities? You’re ready to get started!

How to Measure a Room

The first step in finding the right furniture for your space is to ensure exact measurements of the room.

Step 1: Gather Essential Tools
A sturdy tape measure is the most crucial tool for measuring your room. Avoid using dressmaker's tape, which can stretch, resulting in inaccurate measurements. Keep a notebook and pencil handy to sketch and jot down measurements for reference during furniture shopping.

Step 2: Enlist a Handy Helper
Having a second person (i.e., a neighbor, friend, or family member) to assist you can be invaluable, especially when navigating furniture or other obstacles. They can hold one end of the tape measure or help move items temporarily obstructing your path. You can also rely on our professional designers to ensure your space is measured accurately. As part of our complimentary in-home process, our designer will visit your home free of charge, take measurements, and help with furniture layout, styles, and colors.

Step 3: Conduct Wall & Door Measurements
Start at one corner of the room and measure the length of the wall or space to the opposite corner or to the inside edge of a door or window. Repeat throughout the space. For windows, measure from the floor to the trim height, and for doors, measure from the floor to the inside top.

Step 4: Document Existing Features
Take note of existing room features such as ceiling fixtures, electrical outlets, light switches, fireplace, coffee table, end table, ottoman, floor or wall vents, and TV. While not every feature needs measurements, ensure larger items like fireplaces and TVs are measured for furniture layout accuracy.

How to Measure Furniture

Measuring furniture accurately before purchase is essential to ensure it fits seamlessly into your room layout.
  • Measure the Width of your furniture pieces from arm to arm at their widest points.
  • Measure the Height from the highest point of the furniture to the lowest point, excluding removable pillows or cushions.
  • Measure the Depth of the sofa from the outer edge of the seat to the back of the seat.
Understanding these measurements will help you select furniture that not only fits but enhances your living space effectively.

How to Measure Your Points of Entry

Before deciding on the right furniture, measure the clearance of your hallway. This step is essential to ensure that moving the furniture inside won't cause any damage to the walls and that the furniture can be maneuvered easily.
Measure the Hallway Clearance
Before deciding on the right furniture, measure the clearance of your hallway. This step is essential to ensure that moving the furniture inside won't cause any damage to the walls and that the furniture can be maneuvered easily.
  1. Measure Height and Width: Measure the height and width of the room’s entrance and the hallway leading to the room.
  2. Check Entryway Clearance: Compare the entryway clearance with the furniture's dimensions. If the entryway is wider than the furniture, you can move the furniture horizontally, making the process smoother. If the entryway is narrower, the furniture will need to be moved vertically or diagonally. Therefore, measure the distance from the floor to the top of the entryway to ensure it can accommodate the furniture.

Measure the Delivery Path
Whether you plan to move the furniture yourself or have it delivered, measuring the entire delivery path is essential. This includes all possible entry points, such as the front, back, side, or garage doors.
  1. Measure Consistently: Apply the same measurement techniques to the delivery path, including stairways and elevators, if applicable.
  2. Identify Obstacles: Note any potential obstacles like benches, chairs, or boxes along the delivery path. Move these items before the delivery to ensure a smooth process.
Taking these measurements in advance will help ensure that your new furniture can be delivered and installed without any issues.

Additional Tip! When choosing furniture, it's best to select pieces that are smaller than your passage measurements. This extra space will help ensure the safety and ease of the delivery process. By following these steps, you can look forward to a hassle-free experience when your beautiful new furniture arrives.
